If you have the time, consider traveling to or from Europe by ship. Relive the classic grandeur of a bygone travel era by crossing the Atlantic aboard the Queen Mary 2, the world’s only purpose-built ocean liner. Experience for yourself what it’s like to arrive in New York while gazing up at the Statue of Liberty. And arrive at your destination unburdened by jet lag.
If you have even more time and wherewithal, plan the ultimate bucket list trip: a world cruise. Cunard, Holland America, Princess, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, and other cruise lines all offer once-in-a-lifetime world cruises taking you to dozens of ports of call and bucket list destinations around the globe. Taking a world cruise earns you unique bragging rights, and there’s no quicker way to diamond-level status with your favorite cruise line.
Transatlantic and transpacific ocean crossings, as well as point-to-point segments of world cruises, can be surprisingly affordable. Every spring, many cruise lines reposition ships from the Caribbean to Europe for the season, then bring them back in the fall. It’s not unusual at all to find $400 fares from Miami to Barcelona, even less than airfare (and we still haven’t found an airplane with a pool bar).
If you enjoy sea days, you’ll love crossings and world cruises. Do as much or as little as you like. Catch up on your reading. Attend lectures and classes. Learn to dance or learn to play bridge. And of course, indulge at every meal (and work off a few of those extra calories in the gym the next morning).
We love crossings. In fact, we’ve taken four: three returning from Europe, one going to Europe. Next year we plan to take two more crossings going to and from Europe (one of those times on a luxury Windstar sailing ship!), and the year after that we hope to cross the Pacific for the first time. We think cruises are the BEST way to cross the Atlantic, and we’re more than happy to share our experiences and insight on picking the best crossing. And you guessed it, a world cruise is #1 on our bucket list!
